Car Camping: The Whole Trip, From Booking to Packing Up
The complete first car camping trip, from booking to teardown.

Published manufacturer specs, the standards behind the numbers, today's real prices, and a stated drawback on every pick. We have not tested this gear, and we say so on every page.

The thing nobody else does
Nobody plans a weekend by thinking “I need a 3-season freestanding shelter.” They think “we are taking two kids to a campground in October.” These guides are organized the second way.

Why trust any of this
There is no gear closet here and no test lab. What we do instead is compile the published specifications, name the standard behind every rating so you can check what it actually promises, do the arithmetic that turns a number into a decision, and pull today's real retail price rather than quoting one from memory.
So when we tell you a sleeping pad is warm enough for October, that is ASTM F3340, a hot plate at 35 C above a cold plate at 5 C, measured over four hours. When we tell you a “20 degree” sleeping bag is comfortable at 31 F, that is Kelty's own ISO 23537 figure, not our impression of a night outdoors.
It is reproducible, which no amount of testing is, and it is the one thing we can do honestly at scale. The limits are real too, and we state them: published specs cannot tell you about zipper quality, seam durability, or how a tent behaves at 2am in a storm. The full method is here.
